On 24 March 1965, an expedition sponsored by the National Geographic Society and led by Jim Whittaker reached the summit of Mount Kennedy (4,238 m) in the Elias Mountains in the Yukon for the first time. The summit was named after US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy by his brother Robert, a member of the expedition, who left some mementoes of his brother on the summit.
